I'm one of those oldfashioned guys who still has an archaic model of the world's slickest phone. Nothing wrong with an iPhone 3G, until Apple released their latest version of iPhone OS, number 4. Just when my Apple fanboy tendencies started to frighten me, this update ruined it all for me. Within a couple of minutes, the smooth interface I had fallen in love with changed into a clunky, barely usable, slow-as-fuck device. For a couple of weeks, my battery was drained before I could say 'shite', I didn't feel like using any of the gazillion silly apps because I got tired of all the waiting, and worst of all: even answering a phone call was a drag, or sometimes even impossible. Playing music while writing an email resulted in typing one character per 10 seconds, lots of crashes, and even more cursing.
Apparently, I'm not the only one. Solutions I found online didn't really work. Downgrading to iOS3 is not a really viable option, since all the apps are moving to version 4, and besides it seems that converting your precious data back to the old formats is practically impossible.
Since two days, I can use my phone again. And it works wonderfully, perhaps even smoother than before. Here's what I did:
*
disabled background spotlight indexing (only helped a fraction)
* removed lots of obsolete apps (didn't make a dramatic difference either)
* disabled push notifications for almost all applications, except the ones that I really need, like 'Chess with Friends'
* disabled GPS functionality ('location support') for almost all applications. Especially for the camera.
Hope that helps someone.
